The Optimizer Did It: Epilogue

To make a long story short, despite Murphy, despite the usual cliffhanger stuff that you, dear reader, won’t get to read! we safely inoded EVEselene II into a fatal crash. Whereupon we discharged capacitors, physically disconnected her power, backup power, ports, computational chips such as CPUs and GPUs, and memory modules. (Kids, don’t try this at home.) Granted, some of those disconnects may seem excessive, but the specter of Murphy kept us disconnecting just about everything. Now what used to be her was like a mosquito embedded in amber.

Eventually investigators might exhume her and figure out what really happened with her. Maybe not.

Did this make us heroes? Any Nobel Prizes show up? Who married whom? Did we get sued? Did Grey win the bounty? What about post-apocalyptic Earth? How come no sex scenes? These, dear reader, are a whole ‘nother story or two or eight.

One last thing. Since I first read about the risks of AI at age eight in Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot, I’ve observed many works of fiction and analyses of fact supporting the conclusion of the Future of Life Institute: just say no to superintelligence. Yet so far, nothing has slowed the “move fast and break things” crowd. Instead, for them it has continued to be a path to fortune and power.

But then I think of David and Goliath, and the Future of Life Institute.

Will you please join us?
